NIST AI Agent Standards

The AI Agent Standards Initiative was launched by NIST's Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) in February 2026 to establish technical standards ensuring interoperable, secure, and trustworthy deployment of AI agents across sectors. The initiative addresses the critical gap between rapidly advancing agent capabilities and the lack of standardized frameworks for their safe operation.

Overview

As AI agents move from research prototypes to production deployments, organizations face fundamental challenges: How do agents identify themselves? How do different agent systems interoperate? How are agent actions audited and secured? NIST's initiative brings together industry, academia, and government to develop answers through three strategic pillars.

Three Strategic Pillars

The initiative is organized around three core focus areas:

1. Industry-Led Standards Development

NIST collaborates with industry leaders to develop technical standards for AI agents and advance U.S. leadership in international standards bodies. This includes harmonizing existing protocols (such as Google's A2A and Anthropic's MCP) into coherent interoperability frameworks.

2. Open-Source Protocol Development

CAISI supports community-led development and maintenance of open-source protocols for agent communication, discovery, and coordination. This ensures that agent standards remain accessible and not locked to proprietary implementations.

3. AI Agent Security and Identity Research

The third pillar focuses on researching security threats specific to AI agents, developing mitigation strategies, and establishing identity and authorization mechanisms. This directly connects to the broader challenge of agent identity and authentication.
