====== NIST AI Agent Standards ======

The **AI Agent Standards Initiative** was launched by NIST's Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) in **February 2026** to establish technical standards ensuring interoperable, secure, and trustworthy deployment of AI agents across sectors. The initiative addresses the critical gap between rapidly advancing agent capabilities and the lack of standardized frameworks for their safe operation.

As AI agents move from research prototypes to production deployments, organizations face fundamental challenges: How do agents identify themselves? How do different agent systems interoperate? How are agent actions audited and secured? NIST's initiative brings together industry, academia, and government to develop answers through three strategic pillars.

NIST collaborates with industry leaders to develop technical standards for AI agents and advance U.S. leadership in international standards bodies. This includes harmonizing existing protocols (such as Google's A2A and Anthropic's MCP) into coherent interoperability frameworks.

CAISI supports community-led development and maintenance of open-source protocols for agent communication, discovery, and coordination. This ensures that agent standards remain accessible and not locked to proprietary implementations.
